Draft Tree and Bushland Strategy 2024-2034

Trees and canopy provide many benefits: shade and cooling, character and amenity, biodiversity, and connectivity.

In urban areas, trees reduce pollution, attract investment, manage storm water, and help our wildlife.

That's why Council has developed the Draft Tree and Bushland Strategy - our first long-term, comprehensive plan for trees and bushland, on both public and private land, in Sutherland Shire.

Its Vision is that by 2050, urban trees and bushland are:

'well managed, safe, connected and thriving', and that Council and the community are 'actively working together to...support and maintain the bushland character of Sutherland Shire.'

The Draft Strategy seeks to balance environmental conservation with safety concerns. It sets out seven key Principles to guide decisions, and two Focus Areas to concentrate efforts and resources where they're needed most.

What's next?

Council will review and consider all feedback. The Strategy then be finalised and reported to Council for adoption (expected by early 2025).
