Exercise and Youth Play Facilities Analysis

Council is committed to enhancing outdoor recreation across the Sutherland Shire and is planning for the delivery of new and upgraded outdoor exercise and youth play facilities over the next 15+ years, guided by community feedback.

Council’s Play Strategy (2021–2031) outlined that a high-level analysis and implementation plan for outdoor recreation should take place to guide future delivery across the Shire.

As part of the Exercise and Youth Play Service Analysis, Council has reviewed all locations across Sutherland Shire where exercise and / or youth play facilities currently exist. We've assessed them against the needs of the community.

This analysis included a comprehensive review of mapping, demographic data, service distribution, and current and future demand. This process led to the development of a draft Implementation Plan identifying opportunities for new or upgraded infrastructure.

In response, 26 district and regional level locations have been identified that could support future upgrades or new infrastructure.

At several of these locations, we've proposed indicative facility types, such as outdoor fitness equipment, youth play areas, multi-sport courts, or skate elements. These proposals are based on a range of factors including site suitability, land use, and service coverage.

It’s important to note that all proposed facility types are indicative only and will be subject to further detailed site investigations as part of future stages.

To support long-term planning and delivery, three indicative timeframes have been proposed:

  • Short term: 0–5 years

  • Medium term: 5–15 years

  • Long term: 15+ years.

Locations of Exercise and Youth Play Facilities

Locations with existing facilities and no new proposals are included for transparency, however Council is not seeking feedback on those sites as part of this consultation.

A Table summarising the Exercise and Youth Play Facilities Implementation Plan is included within the documents section.

Have your say

Council is now seeking community feedback to better understand which locations and types of facilities are most valued. This input will help guide future planning and ensure any improvements reflect community needs and expectations.
