Why is Council seeking feedback on Exercise and Youth Play facilities?
Council is committed to ensuring that outdoor exercise and youth play facilities across Sutherland Shire support active and healthy lifestyles for all members of the community.
The Youth Play and Exercise Equipment Service Analysis has identified a number of existing and potential new spaces that may be suitable for future facilities or upgrades — including outdoor exercise equipment for all ages, and play spaces designed specifically for children and young people.
Council is now seeking community feedback to better understand which locations and types of facilities are most valued. This input will help guide future planning and ensure any improvements reflect community needs and expectations.
How were the locations selected?
Locations were identified through the Youth Play and Exercise Equipment Service Analysis, which assessed all existing sites and identified areas with gaps in access, usage, and community need. This included analysis of mapping, demographics, facility distribution, and demand to ensure equitable and strategic planning across the Shire.
Who are the exercise facilities designed for?
The proposed outdoor exercise facilities are designed for people of all ages, not just young people. They aim to promote health and wellbeing across the community by offering accessible and flexible ways to stay active outdoors.
What is the difference between a Regional and District Facility?
The Sutherland Shire Play Strategy (2021) outlines Service Standards for Exercise and Youth Play Facilities.
Council’s Service Standards use a tiered hierarchy based on how far people travel to use a facility. Smaller-scale services are provided at the District level, catering to several suburbs, while larger or more complex spaces are provided at the Regional level to serve the wider Shire.
Examples include:
Can I give feedback if I don’t live near one of the proposed locations?
Yes. All community members are encouraged to have their say—whether you’re a local resident, a visitor to the parks, or a parent, carer, or user of these facilities. Your input will help shape recreational spaces across the Sutherland Shire.
Will there be further consultation before work begins at a site?
Further consultation will occur for each site individually before any works proceed. This consultation is mandatory and will be conducted by Council prior to confirming plans or starting construction.
What will happen after this engagement?
Community feedback received during this engagement will be provided to Council later in the year.
Any future works that occur for any facility upgrades will involve further, specific and more detailed consultation,
