Gannons Road Bike Path and Walking Improvements – Concept Design

Cyclist riding in bike lane alongside traffic in Sutherland

Council is planning walking and cycling improvements along Gannons Road, a key north–south route that connects local neighbourhoods, schools, parks and centres.

These upgrades will help create a safer, more connected active transport network, making it easier and more comfortable for people to walk, ride, drive or push a pram for everyday trips.

The project is being delivered in stages using Federal Government grant funding and is a priority project from Council’s 10-Year Bike Plan.

What's being proposed?

Stage 1: Kingsway to Caringbah Road

Planned construction: 2026–27

Stage 1 will deliver new and upgraded walking and cycling infrastructure between Kingsway and Caringbah Road, including a key connection to the Sutherland to Cronulla Active Transport Link (SCATL) via Denman Avenue.

Proposed improvements include:

  • Completing a pedestrian footpath on the western side of Gannons Road
  • A mix of shared paths and, where space allows, a separated two-way bike path on the eastern side
  • A new pedestrian crossing across Caringbah Road (east of Gannons Road)
  • New on-street parking bays on the western side
  • Road realignment to improve safety and traffic flow
  • Increased capacity for northbound traffic at the Kingsway intersection
  • Minor safety upgrades at the Caringbah Road roundabout

.

Stage 2: Caringbah Road to Burraneer Bay Road

Planned construction: 2027–28

Proposed improvements include:

  • Shared paths and separated two-way bike paths on the eastern side (where possible)
  • A raised pedestrian crossing outside Burraneer Public School
  • New on-street parking bays on the western side
  • Road realignment to support safer travel
Stage 3 and 4: Burraneer Bay Road to Burraneer Park

Planned construction: 2028–29

Proposed improvements include:

  • Shared paths or separated two-way bike paths on the eastern side (where possible)
  • Improved pedestrian and cyclist crossings, including a central island at the Burraneer Bay Road roundabout
  • New raised pedestrian crossingsat:
    • Dominic Street (east of Gannons Road)
    • Gannons Road, south of Northcote Avenue / Dominic Street
  • New on-street parking on one or both sides (where space allows)
  • Road realignment to support safer movement and parking

Why this project is important?

These improvements will:

  • Support safer walking and cycling for all ages and abilities
  • Improve connections between Caringbah, Woolooware and Burraneer
  • Respond to community feedback calling for safer, off-road and separated bike paths
  • Deliver a priority project identified in Council’s 10-Year Bike Plan, helping to connect Sutherland Shire's future cycling network.
