Draft Bike Plan 2024-2033: Shaping the Future of Cycling in Our Community

Ride with us on the journey to a more liveable, productive, and sustainable Sutherland Shire.

We’re excited to share our Draft 10-Year Bike Plan, a vision for making cycling safer and more convenient for everyone in our community, from families to experienced riders.

From healthier lifestyles to reduced car congestion, cycling offers many advantages, especially for short local trips.

This plan focuses on the infrastructure and community programs needed to boost cycling activity over the next decade.

As a starting point, Council has prepared a draft Future Cycling Network which building on existing infrastructure, aims to:

  • Create convenient neighbourhood connections and safer routes to schools
  • Connect gaps in our existing network of bike paths with new on-road and off-road cycleways
  • Improve end of trip facilities like bike parking, showers, lockers, lighting and shade.

Have your say

We’re now seeking your feedback on the plan to improve opportunities for cycling to the places we live, work and play.

  • Bike Plan Adopted

Council reviewed the large volume of feedback on this consultation and made some minor updates to the plan. It was then finalised and presented to Council for consideration at its 15 December meeting.

The report and minutes of the Council meeting are available here. The Bike Plan has now been adopted and the final document will be made available here.

The public-exhibition of the Draft Bike Plan attracted significant community feedback, particularly around e-bike safety concerns.

Assessing the large volume of submissions on e-bikes and suggested road safety changes at particularly locations has taken time.

A key outcome has been the development of an evolving e-bike education campaign, identified as a priority action under the Road Safety Plan.

With regards to feedback on particular cycling routes and locations, each site has been investigated. Insights will help inform future planning, prioritisation and grant funding applications.

Ultimately, this is a high-level plan, and locations have not been identified unless of particular importance, keeping the plan agile so it can be applied across Sutherland Shire.

Thank you for your valued input.
