Draft Sport and Recreation Strategy and Implementation Plan
Sport and recreation facilities are a big part of everyday life in our community, supporting health and wellbeing, social connection, participation, local pride and active lifestyles.
As our community grows, we need to plan ahead so people have fair access to quality sports spaces, no matter where they live or how they choose to be active.
Earlier this year Council reviewed the existing Sport Strategy, published in 2022, to better understand how sport and recreation needs have changed since it was first prepared. The review looked at how people play, train, compete, volunteer and stay active across the local government area today.
The new draft Sports and Recreation Strategy and Implementation Plan looks beyond individual facilities and projects. It provides a long-term direction for how sport and recreation spaces can be planned, improved and managed over time. It’s not only about organised sport. It also considers informal, social and flexible uses of open space, including casual games, training, walking, fitness and other everyday activities.
The draft Strategy aims to make local sports spaces more inclusive, accessible, flexible and useful for clubs, players, volunteers, families and the wider community. A rolling five-year implementation plan will help turn the broader strategy into practical actions, while still keeping sight of longer-term needs and opportunities.
The Strategy and Implementation Plan is built around three key focus areas: People, Places and Participation.
