FAQs
What is the Sport and Recreation Strategy?
The Strategy sets the long-term direction for sport and active recreation across the Sutherland Shire. The Implementation Plan turns that direction into practical actions. The first Strategy was adopted in 2022 and this update guides the next stage of delivery.
Why has Council updated the Strategy?
The way people play, train and stay active keeps changing. More people are using local parks, reserves and community spaces in ways that work for them. There's growing demand for places that are accessible, flexible and able to support both organised sport and informal recreation. The update is informed by community feedback, information about how facilities are being used, population changes, and input from clubs and associations to help guide future planning and investment.
What has been achieved so far?
The current Strategy built the foundations for how Council plans and manages sport and recreation. We have improved how facilities are managed and booked, planned future upgrades, developed long-term plans for tennis and golf, and created more consistent standards across sporting facilities.
Does the Strategy only cover organised sport?
No. It also covers informal and social activities such as cycling, fitness, casual games and water-based recreation, as well as the flexible, welcoming spaces that support them.
Will the Strategy include improvements to the fields or courts I use?
Everyday maintenance and upgrades to local fields, courts and facilities will continue as normal. The revised Strategy doesn’t change how Council manages this day-to-day work.
Instead, it looks at the bigger picture. It helps Council plan for the future by identifying where investment is needed across the Shire, so decisions are made fairly and consistently over time.
Will new facilities be built?
The Strategy may lead to new facilities as well as upgrades to existing ones, but it doesn't approve individual projects on its own.
It looks at how existing facilities are being used, where more space or capacity may be needed, how community needs are changing, and the different ways people are choosing to be active. That helps make sure future investment reflects what the community needs, now and into the future.
Individual projects are then considered and funded separately through Council's planning and budget processes.
