Draft Climate Strategy 2050

Thrive. Design. Lead - Achieving net zero together

We’re drafted our Climate Strategy 2050 Thrive. Design. Lead. to deliver our long-term vision to make climate action a reality.

Our Strategy aims to fulfil our community’s liveability aspirations through renewable energy, sustainable transport, and waste minimisation actions. This will mitigate nearly two million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions generated annually. The reduction in emissions demonstrates leadership in mitigating climate change and achieving net zero together.

Our vision is to implement urgent, strong, and equitable climate change action to achieve net zero by 2030 (Council) and 2050 (community).

We have drafted our Strategy in consultation with our community and key stakeholders. You can read our Snapshot document for a summary of the Strategy. Your feedback has helped shape the aspirations of the Strategy, and our three key focus areas:

  • Thrive
  • Design
  • Lead.

Have your say

We are seeking your feedback on our draft Strategy to ensure it reflects the needs and aspirations of our community to mitigate emissions and achieve net zero together. You can provide feedback until 11 April 2025:

  • Consultation results now available

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on our Draft Climate Strategy 2050 Thrive. Design. Lead. Your input will help shape how Council will support, advocate and partner for an equitable and just community emissions transition to net zero by 2050, and by 2030 for our own operations.

You can view a summary of the consultation results here or by clicking the image below.

We spoke to more than 150 people at our information stalls at Sutherland and Cronulla Libraries and Sutherland Farmers Markets. We also were part of the 2025 Youth Week Climate and Biodiversity Forum and held environmental group and stakeholder workshops. See images below.

Based on community feedback, we have made some updates as we finalise the Strategy. Changes have better embedded climate mitigation education, influence behaviour change, and ensure everyone in the community is supported to reduce emissions through:

    • improved access to public and active transport
    • recycling food waste
    • electric vehicle charging
    • solar, and battery storage.

The Strategy will be going to Council's July 2025 meeting for adoption. We will keep our community and interested participants updated of progress.
