We are excited to share our concept design for the upgrade of Gunnamatta Pavilion and now inviting the community to provide feedback.
Gunnamatta Pavilion is a much-loved community venue in Sutherland Shire and a feature of Gunnamatta Park. Built in 1939, the Pavilion is listed as having local heritage significance. It is currently used by a variety of community groups and regularly hired for general use.
In 2022, Council consulted with the community to seek feedback on how the building could be improved to meet future needs. Since then, we have been working with key stakeholders of the Pavilion to understand current use and space requirements. Both the community and stakeholder feedback has helped shape the proposed concept design for the upgrade of Gunnamatta Pavilion.
The proposal aims to create a vibrant, functional and accessible community hub, while maintaining the building’s cultural and historical character. The concept design includes:
Restoration of the original art deco features
Modern public amenities, including toilets, showers and change facilities
New food and beverage offering, such as a café and/or restaurant
Flexible, multi-use community spaces that will be available for hire and support a range of activities
Improved accessibility, including upgraded pathways and inclusive amenities
Better connection to the waterfront, amphitheatre and surrounding parklands.
In writing to Infrastructure Project Planning, Sutherland Shire Council, Locked Bag 17, Sutherland 1499.
Next steps
Following community consultation on the concept design, we will review and consider all feedback received. We may make changes to the design based on feedback before preparing for Development Application lodgement.
We expect construction to start in 2029, subject to planning approvals, detailed design, procurement of a contractor and funding availability. Timeframes may change as the project progresses.
