The Sutherland Shire 20-Year Waste Strategy is designed to secure the best possible resource recovery and waste management solutions for our community, now and in the future.
Our 2021 waste community consultation showed that we all want to treat waste more sustainably, reduce landfill and recover more valuable resources from the waste stream.
Last year we asked residents about their waste priorities and what's important for Council to focus on.
Here's what they had to say...
What is The Waste Strategy trying to achieve?
Meet mandatory NSW State targets to reduce household waste going to landfill by over 30%, including a 50% reduction in organic waste going to landfill, by 2030
Support the community to use less, recover and recycle more. Expanding Council educational resources, and over time, introducing new services such a combined food and garden organics (FOGO) collection.
Involving the community and protecting their interests by regularly engaging to understand what’s important to them.
Planning and adapting for future needs by scoping technology solutions and encouraging the local circular economy.
This Strategy was developed by consulting with our community, using expert technical advice, evaluating a wide range of options and responsibly planning for practical implementation in achievable steps.
