What is the Sports Strategy and Implementation Plan

The Sports Strategy sets the long-term vision for sport and active recreation in the Sutherland Shire. The Implementation Plan turns that vision into practical actions, including priorities for facilities, programs, and investment.

Why is Council reviewing the strategy now?

We’re reviewing the Strategy to make sure it reflects how people play, train, and stay active today — and what will be needed in the future. Community expectations and participation trends have changed since the plan was first adopted.

What’s changed since the strategy was first adopted?

A lot has already been achieved, including new and upgraded facilities, more inclusive programs, and stronger partnerships with local sporting clubs and associations. The review is an opportunity to recognise this progress and plan the next stage of delivery.

    Key achievements include the:

    • introduction of a sports field allocation policy and supporting guidelines to ensure fairer access
    • development of staging programs for floodlighting, drainage and irrigation
    • establishment of new streamlined booking processes and parking upgrade priorities
    • completion of facility audits and development of a commercial sport user policy
    • development of the Tennis and Golf Facilities Plans
    • setting of standards for new amenities buildings, development of accessibility improvement programs, and creation of formal facility user agreements.

    What changes are being proposed?

We’re not making major changes to the overall strategic direction. The review will focus on updating the Implementation Plan to ensure priorities remain relevant and practical.

Does the strategy only cover organised sport?

No. It also looks at informal and social activities, like walking, fitness training, and casual games. We want to create welcoming, flexible spaces for everyone to stay active.

How will this review benefit the community?

The updated plan will help ensure fair access to quality sports spaces, support health and wellbeing, and improve inclusion and liveability across the Shire.

Will new facilities be built as part of this review and updated strategy and implementation plan?

The review will identify priorities for investment, which may include new facilities or upgrades to existing ones.

Actual projects will depend on available funding and future budgets.

How will community feedback be used?

Your feedback will help Council understand what’s working well, what’s changed, and what needs to be prioritised next. It will directly inform updates to the Strategy and the next Implementation Plan.
