UPDATE 16 July 2018, 12 pm: Contributions to this consultation are being collated for the Council Meeting this evening. The consultation is still open for comment at this time.

Council promotes and will continue to deliver services to our community to enhance healthy and active lifestyles.

However, we also recognise the need to balance service provision that best meets the needs of our community with long term financial sustainability.

Unprecedented rises in energy costs have resulted in challenges on the operating budget of Sutherland Shire Leisure Centres, particularly increasing costs of heating and maintaining outdoor pools in the low season.

A proposal to consider seasonal operation of the pool at Engadine Leisure Centre will be discussed at the next Council meeting.

At this stage no decision has been made.

Engadine Leisure Centre has the lowest visitation rates of the Sutherland Shire Leisure Centres in the low season. Analysis, review and modelling of the visitation rates and cost of operation of the outdoor pools concluded that closing the Engadine Leisure Centre pools at the end of the April school holidays and reopening at the start of the September school holidays would reduce overall operating costs by approximately $185,000 per annum.

Under the proposal, alternate aquatic facilities would remain open at Sutherland and Caringbah Centre and there would be no impact on gym users at Engadine Leisure Centre which will continue to operate as normal throughout the year.

You are encouraged to review the report to be considered by Council.

The matter will be considered by Council at its meeting 16 July 2018.
