Draft Councillor Induction and Professional Development Policy

Who does the draft Councillor Induction and Professional Development Policy apply to?

This policy applies only to Sutherland Shire Councillors, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

    What is Council’s induction program?

Council’s induction program is required to be completed within six months of a local government election. It provides the Mayor and Councillors with a strong foundation of required skills and knowledge to support them in fulfilling their duties. The program helps them become familiar with how the Council works, the rules under which it operates and the complexities of their roles.

Why are Councillors required to do professional development?

Professional development programs help our Councillors build on the required skills and knowledge to perform their roles. Ongoing professional development supports our Councillors to continue making decisions in the best interests of the community and demonstrates Council’s compliance with legislation.

Child Safe Organisation Policy

This policy includes broad statements across different areas, where can I find more detailed information about procedures or operational guidance?

The Child Safe Organisation policy serves as the overarching framework for how our Council approaches child safety across all services and programs. It outlines our principles, commitments, and key focus areas.

For each of these areas, such as recruitment, reporting, risk management, and photography consent, there are detailed procedures and work instructions that guide operational implementation. These documents are used internally to ensure consistency and compliance.

Where can I find Council’s Child Safe Action Plan?

The Child Safe Action Plan outlines the practical steps we are taking to implement the Child Safe Standards. It is available on Council’s webpage here.
