FAQs
Why is Council proposing to relocate the playground at Sylvania Road North Reserve?
The existing playground at Sylvania Road North Reserve is in need of renewal. This provides an opportunity to review the suitability of a playground at this location.
The site at Sylvania Road North Reserve is small and very steep. This limits options for the location of the playground and complementary open space and access opportunities.
In order to improve accessibility, play opportunities and ensure the playground can be used by more people in our local community, Council are proposing to relocate the playground to Webber Street Street Reserve.
What are Council requirements on local playgrounds?
Council’s service standards for local playgrounds in the Sutherland Shire include short-stay playgrounds which focus on play for a single age group (usually younger children) within 10 minutes’ walk from most homes.
At present, Council have 97 local level playgrounds in the Sutherland Shire.
Are there any locations for the playground other than Webber Street Reserve?
There are no other suitable locations nearby for a playground. Webber Street Reserve was chosen as it is central to the local community, it has open space and safe access. It can also be easily accessed via a nearby laneway from the existing playground location at Sylvania Road North.
Can the playground be larger if it's being relocated?
The existing playground at Sylvania Road North Reserve is small for a local playground and the play value is limited. This is largely due to site constraints such as slope, location and existing vegetation.
There is scope to provide a suitably-sized playground with a greater range of play equipment at Webber Street Reserve. This includes play equipment such as slides, climbing equipment and swings plus additional seating, waste bins and drinking fountain (subject to services on the site).
Can the playground at Sylvania Road North Reserve stay as well as the new playground at Webber Street Reserve?
The playground at Sylvania Road North Reserve is at the end of its life and needs to be renewed. If the proposed playground is constructed at Webber Street Reserve, Council will decommission the existing playground at Sylvania Road North Reserve.
