Loftus Avenue Traffic Calming Feedback

Consultation Period: 28 September - 26 October 2022

Council is seeking community feedback on options to improve road safety along a section of Loftus Avenue and Wheatley Road (from Natai Street to Giles Street – see Map).

Loftus Avenue, between Myrtle Street and Cranberry Street, has had five casualty crashes resulting in 10 injuries in the five year reporting period, making it eligible for funding under the Black Spot Program.

Site observations, risk assessment, and extensive speed and crash data analysis indicates that the majority of injuries sustained here were due to driver error with speeding being a significant contributing factor.

The introduction of “traffic calming” measures is an effective way to improve road safety by helping to manage speeding and other adverse driver behaviour/s. Read more about these in our FAQs.

An initial proposal from Council to introduce traffic calming measures in this area attracted some concerns from the local community. Council listened to this feedback and has now engaged an independent traffic consultant to do a further review of conditions and proposed treatment options, and to expand the study area to include Wheatley Road north of Giles Street.

To better inform the review and decision-making process, we are now seeking further feedback from the community.

  • In writing to Traffic and Public Domain Unit, Sutherland Shire Council, Locked Bag 17, Sutherland 1499

Next steps

The independent consultant will review and consider community feedback as part of its final recommendations to Council. Council will consider the consultants report and community feedback. Community safety will be considered a high priority when making final decisions about the project.

  • Revised scheme proposed

Based on community feedback and the independent review, a staged approach to traffic calming is proposed.

    This will involve:

    • Edge line-markings on both sides of Loftus Avenue and Wheatley Road
    • Visual speed checking devices
    • Minor devices such as kerb blister, refuge island and right turn bay

These measures aim to reduce the speed profile of the road, while being less impactful to motorists and adjoining residents.

Council will continue to monitor road safety data. Depending on the success of these measures, other traffic calming devices (such as oval thresholds) may be required in future.

Work is planned to start in July 2024.
