Where will the Hub be located?

The new community space will be located within a vacant 1,500m2 commercial space on the ground floor of South Village development. The Biddy Giles Park and Playground is adjacent outside. See the location map here.

When is construction expected to start?

It is expected that construction will commence in late 2024.

Are my rates paying for the fit out?

This project received state government funding from an Accelerated Infrastructure Fund Grant Round 3 (Department Planning and Environment) as well as a Public Library Infrastructure Grant (State Library). It will be paid for by a mix of grant and Council funding.

What benefits will this project deliver?

The Hub will complement the existing range of services provided at the nearby Sutherland Library rather than replicate it, and offer spaces not currently provided at any of our local libraries.

The community and local business, schools and university students will benefit from improved access to a range of study, work, meeting, media and event spaces.

The project will make it safer and more enjoyable for everyone to walk and move about the Hub and surrounding South Village precinct.

    What features will it include?

    • Large, flexible community space
    • Bookable event space for 100-150 people that can be booked out of hours if needed
    • Bookable screening room
    • Green screen, sound stage room for film production
    • Storage facilities
    • Dedicated library event space for expanded events offering
    • Increased study and/or co-working space with computers, internet and library access
    • Meeting rooms available to the community
    • Amenities within the Hub and surrounds
    • Customer service provided by Sutherland Libraries
    • Kitchen area for public and private event use ("The Bar")

Will there be disruption to traffic and parking?

When construction work is underway there may be some impacts to traffic, parking and pedestrian access. Disruption will be minimised and safety of our community while delivering this project is paramount. A pedestrian and traffic management plan will be communicated and in place to manage this.

What community consultation has been done to date?

This project responds to community feedback that libraries should be purpose built with flexible, multipurpose spaces to cater for diverse needs and interests.

Council sought community feedback on the future of our libraries in a 2021 consultation and 2022 consultation. You can read more about this on p54-57 of the Library Strategy.

More than 800 residents, including children and older people, were integral to the development of the Library Strategy.

Council’s Community Venues Strategy, which was on public exhibition in late 2022, also informed the architects design brief for the Hub. See a summary of community feedback here.

Will I be able to borrow books from the Hub?

Books will be available to pick up and a collection will be available.
