Update on Housing Strategy March 2025

The NSW Government has released five-year housing completion targets for every council, along with the Low and Mid-Rise Housing Reform to help address the housing crisis. For the Sutherland Shire, the target is 6,000 additional dwellings over the next five years. These targets prioritise more diverse and well-located homes in areas with existing infrastructure capacity.

Sutherland Shire Council has been developing a new Housing Strategy to meet both the community's housing needs and the State's housing targets. At the February 2025 meeting, Council decided to move forward with public exhibition of the draft Housing Strategy 2041 and the Affordable Housing Contribution Scheme.

We have submitted the two strategies to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) for formal feedback. Following DPHI feedback, we will seek community feedback on the two strategies. We expect consultation to take place between April - May 2025. We will update our community once the strategies are publicly available. There will be multiple ways for you to provide feedback and share your views to ensure our plans meet community expectations.

From mid 2025 place plans for Miranda, Sutherland-Kirrawee, and Caringbah will be reported to Council, detailing how these centres will change and grow over the next 10 years. We expect to share an update with our community later this year on progress of these plans.
