Planning for Gunnamatta Park and Tonkin Oval, Cronulla

Consultation period: 27 July to 31 August 2022

Gunnamatta Park and Tonkin Oval form a key recreational precinct for the Sutherland Shire. Council is looking at ways to improve how the spaces are used and provide better opportunities for recreation. The improvements will aim to support our active lifestyles now and in the future.

Gunnamatta Park is a large reserve on the shore of Gunnamatta Bay with important archaeological and heritage value and significant remnant vegetation including many mature trees. The area includes a sheltered beach, netted tidal baths and jetty, open grassed areas, picnic tables and BBQs, a playground, amphitheatre, a large 200 seat picnic shelter and Gunnamatta Pavilion.

Tonkin Oval is a large oval that is used for active recreation and organised sport. The reserve provides access and views to the head of Gunnamatta Bay and walking connections leading to Cronulla’s shops and beaches, train station and around Gunnamatta Bay. The connecting walkway between Tonkin Oval and Gunnamatta Park is highly used by the community and forms part of this recreation area.

We know our local community value the swimming baths, access to water and the natural surrounds. We want these valued elements to remain and make improvements to meet our community's needs.

We will prepare a draft Masterplan to set the future vision for the Gunnamatta Park-Tonkin Oval Precinct.
