In November 2014 the NSW State Government issued a Planning Circular (PS 14-003) requiring councils to address the issue of coastal hazards on section 149 planning certificates. Sea level rise is one such coastal hazard.
In 2012 the NSW State Government withdrew a state wide sea level rise policy applying a sea level rise of up to 90cm by 2100 and required individual councils to adopt their own local policy.
Consequently, Sutherland Shire Council at its meeting on 9 May 2016 adopted a draft Sea Level Rise Policy with a sea level rise projection of up to 72cm by 2100. This policy will provide a balanced framework to assist Council and the community to respond to emerging sea level rise risks.
Council welcomes submissions in relation to the draft Sea Level Rise Policy, submissions will be accepted from 9am Wednesday 22 June 2016 and close at 5pm Thursday 21 July 2016.
