FAQ's
How is Council ensuring the Aboriginal heritage remnants are protected?
Physical remnants of Aboriginal heritage are spread throughout the reserve. Much of this is under the surface in the form of middens, which are vulnerable to destruction by erosion of the reserve surface. Middens are considered a vital connection to generations of Aboriginal people who occupied this area.
Council will put measures in place to reduce the impacts of erosion on the reserve. Interpretive signage will be used to educate the community about the significant heritage values of the site and its cultural importance.
How will Council reduce the impacts of erosion?
Council will remediate and stabilise the foreshore to protect the reserve from wind and wave impact. To limit the effects of man-made erosion, Council will restrict vehicle access to a repaired turning head and promote sensitive and responsible recreational use of the reserve.
When will the work take place?
It is expected that work will start at Darook Park North in late 2021.
Will the reserve area be closed during the work?
Some areas of the reserve may be temporarily closed while work is in progress.
I have a wedding booked at Darook Park. Will this be affected?
Council will ensure no weddings or other services are booked in Darook Park North during the construction period.
Bookings will continue to be available in Darook Park South.
