Why is Council proposing to upgrade the Playground?

    Play spaces are highly valued by the community and are a key part of the Shire’s identity. The Como Pleasure Grounds playground renewal is part of Council’s commitment to improving community spaces and providing safe, accessible, and engaging play areas for all ages and abilities. 

    The current playground is due for an upgrade to enhance play opportunities, improve accessibility and create a more inviting space for park users and visitors.

    When will construction start and finish?

    Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026. The exact timeframe will depend on final design, approvals and weather conditions. More details, including expected completion dates will be shared once the construction schedule is confirmed.

    Will the park be closed during the construction period?

    The playground and the immediate area surrounding it will be closed during construction to enable construction activities to occur.

    Does this upgrade include work to the Como Swimming Pool?

    A feasibility study is being undertaken to investigate the status and condition of the Como Swimming Pool, however this upgrade does not include any capital works to the Como Swimming Pool.

    What is the approximate size of the new playground space?

    The new playground will be in the same location as the existing play space with a similar area allowed for play equipment. The proposed play space will grow from 350m2 to 380m2 as a result of improved access, pathways and play amenity.

    Why is the paddle steamer play unit named s.s. Telephone?

    The s.s. Telephone was the name of the paddle steamer that was run by the Sanbrook Brothers along the George’s River, at the turn of the century.

    Local history indicates Como as one of the pickup and drop-off sites when the s.s Telephone, a paddlewheel steam ferry that took picnickers to various other picnic grounds along the George’s River. 

    The vision of the play space comes from the desire to capture and express the unique character, heritage value and nostalgia that defines the pleasure grounds “Paddle Steamer” era of the late 19th century.
