FAQs
What is a Catchment and Waterway Management Strategy?
The Catchment and Waterway Management Strategy will set the long term direction for the sustainable management of stormwater assets, creeks, floodplains, catchments and coasts across the Sutherland Shire. It will also set actions for implementation over the short and medium term.
What is a catchment?
A catchment is an area in which rainwater collects and run offs to an outlet. A catchment can be as small as a roof or as large as the catchment for the Georges River.
What waterways will the strategy cover?
The strategy will consider the open coast, the estuarine bays and rivers, freshwater creeks and wetlands and the stormwater drainage network.
What area does the strategy cover?
The strategy covers the entire Sutherland Shire with a focus on urbanised areas.
The main river catchments are Georges River, Woronora River and Port Hacking. The strategy will also cover Bate Bay and the southern side of Botany Bay.
What is the link between catchments and waterways?
Every waterway has a catchment draining to it. The health of the waterway is heavily dependent on the state of the catchment.
When will the Strategy be finalised?
Council will review comments received and use the information to help inform the draft Catchment & Waterway Management Strategy and Implementation Plan.
The draft Strategy will be publicly exhibited in March / April 2022. The strategy will then be updated, finalised and formally adopted by Council
