Bundeena Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan

Consultation has concluded

Sutherland Shire Council has prepared a draft plan to reduce the risk of flooding in Bundeena. Council is now seeking community feedback on the draft plan.

Bundeena has a long history of flooding. Flooding from Bundeena Creek has occurred in 1977, 1984 and as recently as 2016. The upper parts of Bundeena are also at risk of flooding from overland flow.

The plan has been prepared in accordance with the NSW Government’s Flood Prone Land Policy. Preparation of the plan has been overseen by Council’s Floodplain Management Committee. The committee includes representatives from Council, the NSW Government and the Bundeena community.

What does the plan say?

The plan shows the level of flood risk across Bundeena (refer to map). The plan also describes the impacts of flooding.

The plan recommends several measures to reduce flood risk, including:

  • Bundeena Creek entrance management works on Horderns Beach
  • Updating flood-related development controls
  • Voluntary house raising
  • Establishing a flood warning system
  • Improving community flood awareness

How can I have my say?

Council is seeking feedback from the local community on the draft plan.

The draft plan will be publicly exhibited for four weeks from Monday 3 June 2019.

The local community is encouraged to provide comments via a survey questionnaire available at the above website.

Council will hold a public meeting to discuss the draft plan:

  • When: Wednesday 19 June 2019, 6.30 to 8.30 pm

What happens next?

Council will consider the community feedback. It is expected the plan will be updated, finalised and formally adopted.

Council will then begin planning for and implementing the measures recommended in the plan. The Bundeena community will continue to be consulted during this process.
