Policies Under Review - April 2025

Consultation period: 10 April 2025 - 9 May 2025

Council has reviewed and updated the following policies and would like your feedback:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Signage Policy Review

Council has reviewed and updated its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Signage Policy to guide the process of creating and displaying First Nations heritage and interpretive signage.

Through the use of signage, the purpose of this policy is to:

  • Recognise and affirm the Dharawal people as the Traditional Custodians of the region stretching from the southern shore of Kamay Botany Bay and along the Georges River, to the Shoalhaven River.
  • Promote an awareness of Dharawal, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage in Sutherland Shire, such as cultural connections to bushland and waterways.
  • Promote the Dharawal language.
  • Identify opportunities to promote education and increase protection of Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Appointment of Councillor Delegates to Committees Policy Review

Council has reviewed the Appointment of Councillor Delegates to Committees Policy in line with Council’s rolling policy review schedule.

The Policy sets out the way in which Councillors are elected to Committees and provides guidance for Councillors and staff on the election process and conduct.

Footpath Provision and Management Policy Review

Council has reviewed and updated its Footpath Provision and Management Policy.

The updated Policy guides Council where to maintain and build new footpaths in Sutherland Shire. The Policy also provides guidance on prioritising candidate projects for inclusion in Council’s Active Transport Program.

Council’s Active Transport Strategy encourages active transport, such as walking and cycling. By delivering and maintaining new footpaths, we can help sustain a healthier and more active lifestyle in Sutherland Shire.

Key updates to the Footpath Provision and Management Policy include:

  • Renaming of the Footpaths Construction Program to the Active Transport Program
  • Addition of new principle 3.8.2 to consider single commercial properties, e.g. aged care facilities and child-care centres, where we will construct a new footpath across the frontage of these properties.
