Woronora River Dredging Management Plan

Consultation has concluded

Woronora River Dredging Management Plan finalised

We have now completed the Woronora River Dredging Management Plan to guide how dredging is carried out in the future.

The plan was adopted by Council in its meeting on 28 April 2025.

As part of its development, we surveyed the river, gathered feedback from the community and worked with expert consultants to ensure the plan is well-informed. This included a public consultation, and a community drop-in session held in October 2024.

Thank you to everyone who contributed.

The final plan details the long-term approach to keeping the river safe and accessible for residents, waterway users and emergency services.

Our dredging approach includes:

  • ongoing targeted dredging at priority areas as needed, such as Gweneth Thomas Wharf and the Rural Fire Service facility
  • regular surveying of the riverbed to monitor sediment build-up
  • navigational dredging (potentially every 7-10 years as determined by riverbed surveying), at the seven highly-sedimented problem areas identified along the river, as shown in this map.

As the NSW Government owns the riverbed in navigational channels, they are responsible for funding this work. Council will continue to apply for grants to support dredging and help keep the river accessible.
