Public Domain Lighting Feedback
Consultation period: 17 August 2022 – 14 September 2022
Council is inviting community feedback to help shape our Public Domain Lighting needs and service standards, which will form part of the draft Public Domain Strategy (under development).
The public domain is made up of the footpath/ verge areas in streets as well as structured gathering places such as retail centre pavements including Cronulla Plaza and Engadine Town Square.
There are three focus areas for Public Domain Lighting:
1. Places for everyone
Our Public Domain to be a place for all both day and night. Areas which are well lit are safe areas, encourage night time activity, and provide greater opportunities for passive surveillance. These places are less likely to experience incidents of criminal or anti-social activity.
2. Places to spend time
We want to provide comfortable, attractive and sustainable centres that feel safe and inviting at night through compliant and ambient lighting treatment. By utilising a range of lighting options available, Council aims to take a more sustainable approach to energy management for public lighting.
3. Places that prosper
We want to encourage and support night time economy through highly visible and interesting contemporary lighting. Capturing the unique qualities of Sutherland Shire by day and transferring these to a night time environment, to attract residents, workers and visitors alike.
NOTE: Sports lighting is covered under Council's Sports Strategy. This survey does not include lighting of sports fields/facilities.
