Background:

Nancy Richmond was born on 11 November 1922. She was a nurse and long time Sutherland Shire resident who grew up in Engadine. She passed away on 4 May 2020 at the age of 97.

During the period 1946 to 1971, Nancy was the owner and Matron of San Gerard Private Hospital, a 10 bed private maternity hospital formally located on the land neighbouring Engadine Town Park. Her six children were born at the facility and the family lived onsite. During this time Nancy delivered thousands of babies at this hospital and one of the last children born at San Gerard was Nancy’s first grandson in 1971.

After the closure of the hospital, Nancy worked in the maternity ward at Sutherland Hospital for many years and then moved into aged care later in her career. Nancy worked as a nurse until she was 85 years of age.

In addition to her nursing efforts, in 1963 Nancy received a Service Medal of the Order of St John for her volunteering contribution with the St Johns Ambulance Brigade.

Council acknowledges that the names we give to places and facilities convey their significance through a sense of history, identity, and connection between people and a place. Therefore; this proposal provides a lovely recognition of a well-respected local midwife who lived and worked in the community and her life time dedicated to support mothers and babies in the local area.
