Council has received a proposal to rename Hawkesbury Park, "James Goyen Reserve"

Sutherland Shire Council has received a proposal requesting that Council rename Hawkesbury Park, located at 1R Moruya Avenue "James Goyen Reserve." Hawkesbury Park which includes the playground, park, and boat ramp at the end of Hawkesbury Esplanade in Sylvania Waters has been a gazetted geographical name since 1985.

The name "James Goyen Reserve" has been proposed to recognize the contributions of James Goyen to the development of Sylvania Waters as a residential area. Mr Goyen was a builder and developer in the St George District who, drawing on inspiration from the Florida Keys, USA was instrumental in transforming the Gwawley Bay oyster farms into the water front community that exists today.

In its meeting on 17 July 2017, Council resolved to undertake further community consultation in respect to the renaming proposal prior to making a formal submission to the Geographical Names Board.

Public comment is welcomed through this forum, or by telephone, email, or post using the contact details below. Comments on the naming proposal will be received until midnight Wednesday, 30 August 2017.
