Our plan for FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics)
Consultation period: 11 August to 22 September 2025
You’ve probably heard about FOGO by now — through our newsletters, signs, social media, or community events — but if not, that’s okay. We’ve been sharing information to help people get familiar with what FOGO is and what it means for our community.
What is FOGO?
FOGO – stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics and is your upcoming household waste collection service. FOGO is a new way to collect food scraps and garden waste, so they can be turned into compost instead of going to landfill.
It starts with your kitchen caddy (which will be provided by Council with compostable liners / bags). The caddy sits on your bench or under the sink to collect food scraps. Everything you put into your FOGO kitchen caddy goes into your existing Green lid bin – along with your garden organics (lawn clippings, leaves, flowers, small sticks). If it’s food or grows in your garden, it’s good to FOGO!
How will FOGO work?
The proposed plan for how we manage and collect FOGO will involve a simple change to how you use your bins at home. By placing food scraps and garden waste together in your Green lid bin, we can reduce landfill and create compost for use in fields, parks and farms.
Under this new plan, bin night will look like this:
- Red lid bin for general waste will stay a weekly collection
- Green lid garden bin becomes your Green lid FOGO bin and increases to a weekly collection
- Yellow lid bin for mixed recyclables will stay the same with a fortnightly collection.
FOGO will be introduced in stages starting with houses from late 2026.
We know there is a little bit more to coordinate with apartments and multi-unit buildings such as shared bin storage, space and access, so these will roll out progressively throughout 2027. This staged approach will help us manage this transition and minimise impacts for this once in a generation change to the way we manage our waste in the Sutherland Shire.
Have your say
We believe we’ve identified the best way to roll out FOGO across the Sutherland Shire - but we want to hear from you.
Does this approach make sense for local households? Are there things we’ve missed or ways it could work better? Let us know your thoughts and suggestions.
