FAQs
Why did Council introduce timed parking in the trial area?
Timed parking is a great way to make better and more efficient use of parking spaces in areas of high parking demand. It is an approach commonly used in our retail centres and other busy areas to increase ‘parking turnover’.
It also optimises parking opportunity and provides more equitable access to the different range of uses along and around the beachfront area.
What does ‘parking turnover’ mean?
Parking turnover refers to how often vehicles use a parking space. It means more people have opportunity to access a parking space and the services or facilities nearby.
Where did the three hour timed parking trial take place in North Cronulla?
The trial consisted of 253 parking spaces along the eastern side of Prince Street and Mitchell Road fronting the North Cronulla and Elouera beachfront. The trial area started at North Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club and finished at the intersection of Mitchell Road and Marine Esplanade. You can see the trial area in our Map.
How much of the existing beachfront parking was affected by the trial?
253 spaces were included in the trial which is less than 20 per cent of the 1,289 parking spaces between North Cronulla and Wanda Surf Lifesaving Clubs. You can see our Map showing the trial area and surrounding parking.
Why was three hours selected for time restriction?
Three hours allows a sufficient time for most recreational users and provides greater equity by increasing the capacity of the parking spaces within the trial area during peak times.
Why was the trial limited to weekends and public holidays?
These are the peak times which require attention to make it easier to find a parking space. and reduce traffic congestion.
