Naming of Public Open Space and Facilities Policy Review

Consultation period: 31 August - 27 September 2026

Council recognises the importance of the names given to places. Place names help tell the story of a place, reflecting its history, identity and connection to community. To ensure a consistent and transparent approach to naming places and facilities, Council has reviewed our Policy and is seeking community feedback on the proposed changes. The Policy was last adopted in October 2022.

The Policy is closely aligned with the Geographical Names Board which has statutory authority to assign place names in New South Wales.

Key revisions to the Policy include:

  • focus on diversity and cultural heritage and Council’s commitment to transparent and consultative decision making
  • inclusion of both Aboriginal and European cultural and historical heritage
  • highlighting the need to consult with Traditional Custodians and Aboriginal organisations when considering names that recognise Aboriginal cultural heritage
  • updates to align with the Geographical Names Board requirements, policies and guidelines
  • inclusion of updated titles, terms and responsibilities.

Note: The draft Policy was updated on 1 September 2026 to correct a minor omission in the document.
