We are committed to managing our libraries well. Council adopted a Library Strategy in 2022 and one of the key actions in the strategy was to conduct a feasibility study to harmonise library opening hours.

As part of the study, we monitored how many people enter and exit the library and conducted regular headcounts. Analysis of visitor patterns has found high levels of demand for earlier opening hours, while visitor numbers fall at night. 

We asked our community for feedback on opening hours as part of the consultation for the Library Strategy in 2021. For the small percentage of respondents who were dissatisfied with current opening hours or had feedback, opening branch libraries from 9am and for longer on weekends was frequently mentioned, particularly in relation to Saturday sport for many families. Many survey respondents were open to libraries changing operating hours to provide staffing that best meets the community’s needs.

Changing our opening hours will make sure we are operating efficiently and our community can access our services when its most convenient.
