Draft Electric Vehicle (EV) Position Paper

Consultation period: 21 August to 21 September 2025 - now closed thanks for your feedback.
Council will review and consider all feedback received. We may make changes to the position paper before we finalise for endorsement by Council. We will continue to share information and keep our community updated all feedback received prior to reporting back to Council for adoption of the final position paper.
Background
Sutherland Shire Council supports the transition to electric vehicles as part of broader efforts to cut transport emissions and meet net zero targets.
As part of this, we have developed a draft Electric Vehicle (EV) Position Paper to guide how we support the community’s shift to electric vehicles. The draft outlines Council’s role, priorities, and partnerships to ensure EV charging is accessible, fair, and integrated with our public spaces.
While most EV charging happens at home or in workplaces, we recognise not everyone has off-street parking. Public charging spaces can provide residents, visitors, and ride-hailing vehicles with convenient access to charging when they need it.
The key elements of the draft position paper include:
- prioritising publicly accessible EV chargers in off-street car parks.
- focusing EV charging in locations that protect the public domain, maintain pedestrian safety, and minimise parking impacts.
- facilitating delivery of public EV charging infrastructure through partnerships, rather than Council owning or directly managing it.
- ensuring EV charging infrastructure is free from advertising elements to preserve the visual integrity of public spaces and avoid conflicts with existing advertising contracts.
- partnering with Ausgrid, commercial operators, and other agencies to deliver charging in key locations, using grants and cost-neutral arrangements to minimise impacts on ratepayers.
