Consultation open: 3 February to 17 March 2026
Got a broken TV, an empty gas bottle, or a couple of old paint tins left over from a renovation that never quite happened? Not sure what to do with them or where to take them?
From time to time, everyone ends up with items that can’t go in the usual household bins. Some of these items may still be reusable or recyclable, but they need special handling to be dealt with safely.
Council is investigating options to establish local Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) in Sutherland Shire. These centres would help make it safer and easier to drop off problem waste.
A CRC provides a place to drop off items that don't go in your Red lid garbage bin and Yellow lid recycling bin. They can help keep hazardous materials out of landfill, protect the local environment and reduce illegal dumping.
Proposed CRC sites
Council-managed sites in Kurnell and Kareela have been identified as potential locations for local CRCs. These areas have been selected based on safety, environmental and other operational requirements.
The Kurnell site is expected to operate as the larger CRC, with longer opening hours and the ability to accept a wider range of problem waste items. The Kareela site is anticipated to operate as a smaller centre, with shorter opening hours and unable to accept the full range of materials.
Items typically accepted at CRCs | Items that are sometimes included in CRCs |
- Paint and paint tins
- Motor oils
- Household batteries
- Car batteries
- Gas bottles
- Smoke detectors
- Fire extinguishers
- Fluoro globes and tubes
| - Mattresses
- Whitegoods
- Scrap metals
- Soft plastics
- E-waste
- Textiles and clothing
- Printer cartridges
- X-ray film
- Polystyrene
|
The list of items our CRCs may accept is not yet final and will be confirmed as planning progresses.
CRCs are intended to complement existing services and will not replace Red lid bins or Yellow lid bins. Bulky waste clean-ups, e-waste drop-off events and household chemical cleanout services will also continue to operate.
Have your say
We want to understand how you currently deal with items that cannot go in your household bins, and what would make a CRC easier and more practical for you to use in the future.
