Want to know more about common words used when talking about climate change, see our glossary of key terms…
Biodiversity
The variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable.
Circular economy
Circular economy is an economic system that aims to reduce waste and pollution, and regenerate or reuse resources. It is different from a linear economy that consumes finite resources and discards products after use. A circular economy is designed to benefit people and the planet by decoupling economic activity from resource consumption and restoring or adding value to materials.
Climate adaption
Changing the way we live to meet the imminent environmental challenges caused by climate change such as sea level rise, extreme weather events, warmer temperatures and biodiversity loss.
Climate mitigation
Reducing emissions of and stabilising the levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to limit the impact of climate change.
Net-zero
A target of completely negating the amount of greenhouse gases produced by human activity, to be achieved by reducing emissions and implementing methods of absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Smart hub
A multi-functional community facility comprising of renewable energy generation, charging facilities, and functional social space accessible to the public.
Solar and battery storage
The combination of photovoltaic cells (solar) to generate renewable electricity with a battery to store surplus energy for use later.
Passive building design
A passive building is a building standard that reduces or eliminates the need for an active heating or cooling system. It is highly energy efficient, comfortable, and affordable. It is also environmentally friendly and promotes acoustic insulation.
