Bate Bay Coastal Management Program 2021
Consultation period: 1 December to 17 January 2022
The Bate Bay foreshore is one of Sutherland Shire’s most important natural assets and is of significant social, environmental and economic value. Extending from Bass and Flinders Point at Cronulla to Boat Harbour at Kurnell, the foreshore encompasses the Shire’s iconic surfing beaches, vegetated coastal dunes and the popular Esplanade pedestrian path.
About the Coastal Management Program
Council has developed a draft Coastal Management Program for Bate Bay and its foreshore in consultation with various community stakeholder groups. The Program provides a set of prioritised and cost-effective actions that will help ensure the Bate Bay foreshore is ecologically healthy, resilient, attractive and accessible.
The key management measures considered include:
- A seawall at North Cronulla Beach
- Beach nourishment
- Restoration of the Prince Street seawall
- Enhancing of the Esplanade between Cronulla and North Cronulla
- Opportunities to improve the recreational and environmental amenity of the Esplanade south of Cronulla Beach
- Collaborating with NSW Government agencies regarding Wanda dunes management
- Working with key stakeholders for Greenhills and Boat Harbour regarding the environmental risk of 4WD vehicle access and future residential development
- Promoting cultural heritage, the national surfing reserve, local events and local business development.
The project builds on the positive work undertaken over many decades and takes account of the complexities associated with this dynamic stretch of coastline. The draft program has been developed in accordance with the NSW Government’s coastal management framework. Council has consulted with community groups, the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment as well as the Sydney Coastal Councils Group to prepare the draft program.
