 Alcohol Free Zones apply to roads, carparks and footpaths. They are established by councils and enforcement is undertaken by the NSW Police. NSW Police are empowered to seize and dispose of alcohol being consumed in an Alcohol Free Zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Alcohol Free Zones are designed for a period of four years, after which they are reviewed and renewed as required.

Alcohol Prohibited Areas (APAs) relate to parks, reserves and beaches. It is prohibited to consume or possess alcohol in an Alcohol Prohibited Areas.
